Video Link To Jesse Martin's TEDxDU Speech

(above) Jesse Martin spoke at the TEDxDU Luncheon on Thursday

University of Denver senior Jesse Martin was a featured speaker at the TEDxDU Xpress: Overcoming Adversity event held Thursday on the DU campus. Over 200 people attended the seminar.

Martin gave a powerful speech about his life-changing experience for close to 30 minutes. Even if you knew many of the details of his neck injury suffered in North Dakota last year, its gripping to hear his version as events unfolded. Even more stunning is his perspective on life and the people who influenced him in the weeks following the injury.

This is 28 minutes worth spending to listern to Jesse and feel his humility and spirit. As a DU alumnus, it makes you so overpoweringly proud to have young man like Jesse wear the Crimson and Gold. And even if you aren't connected to DU, the time you spend with this video will likely inspire you and help you look at life in new ways.

I am a father of one of the current DU hockey players. In all my 57 years of life I have never heard something so moving. I myself will never look at little things the same way. A missed shot, a turnover just isn't that important. Wins and losses have just been put in perspective by Mr. Jesse Martin. I am honored that my son is a teammate of his.

Truly an inspirational speech that everyone should watch. I was mesmerized watching this last night. He is the hope that a lot of parapalegics will look to. Jesse will be a success no matter what career path he chooses. It would not surprise me to see him get involved with those who haven't been as lucky as him. Here is to hoping for his full recovery and that he can teach his future children how to skate.

According to Jesse, "One hospital wouldn't send his medical documents across town to another hospital because they were 'competing hospitals.'"

His doctor had to drive across town and pick up the MRI's.

After we shoot all the lawyers and Goldman Sachs partners we need to round up hospital administrators.

Wow, that was incredible. It's hard to put into words how powerful that video is and what type of person Martin must be. There is a message in that clip for everyone.

Has there been any talk at DU about Martin being recognized at one of the remaining home games?

My nine year old nephew and I just watched the video together. As you probably know, nine year old boys have the attention span of a rabbit. He listened to the whole 28 minutes, occasionally asking what some words meant.

After the the video ended, he went and got his DU jersey and some athletic tape. He fashioned a large 14 on the back of the jersey that he will wear to Magness tonight.
